Year 6 | Short Division (Bus Stop Method) Worksheets

Build fluency with division methods using this Year 6 short division worksheet, where children are asked to solve a range of calculations using the standard bus stop method. Each problem is set out in a simple format with a large space alongside for working out. The questions include 2-digit, 3-digit and 4-digit dividends, covering both exact answers and those with remainders. With a clear visual layout and progressive challenge, this activity allows learners to practise short division confidently and independently.

Key Curriculum Focus

This KS2 calculation worksheet aligns with the national curriculum by supporting:

  • Dividing numbers up to 4 digits by one-digit numbers using formal written methods
  • Interpreting remainders according to the context of the question
  • Improving accuracy and confidence when using short division strategies

Children are encouraged to show their working clearly as they divide each number, helping them track place value and identify any remainders. The problems offer variation in difficulty while keeping the focus on consolidating a core written method that supports future multi-step problem solving.

Short Division in Year 6 Maths

Short division, often called the bus stop method, is used when dividing by a one-digit number. For example, 2,444 ÷ 7 is set out with each digit divided step by step using remainders where necessary. In Year 6, pupils are expected to use this method efficiently, even with larger numbers, and to apply their results to problem-solving contexts, such as interpreting remainders as fractions or whole numbers depending on the situation.

Activity Idea: Division Relay

Split the class into small teams. On the board, write a division problem. The first pupil in each group solves the first step, then hands it to the next pupil for the next stage. The team that completes the whole question correctly first wins a point. This quick-fire activity promotes methodical thinking and collaborative problem-solving.
