Understanding Binary Code in Primary Computing

Binary is the language computers use to store and process data. Each binary digit, or bit, is either a 0 or a 1. For example, the binary number 101 means “one lot of four, no twos, and one unit” — which equals 5. In KS2, children learn how digital systems rely on these two states (on and off) to run everything from games to websites. Using binary supports the development of logical thinking and helps bridge maths and computing in a meaningful way.

Activity Idea: Binary Matching Challenge

Give each pupil a set of binary cards and matching decimal cards (e.g. 0101 and 5). Ask them to match each pair correctly, using the reference chart included in the pack. To extend the activity, challenge them to convert new decimal numbers into binary on mini whiteboards.
