Algorithms Lesson Information Set

Algorithms in Primary Computing

Primary-aged pupils begin to grasp that computers need specific directions just like people do. Through modelling real-life routines, visual cards and basic programming tools, pupils begin to create and follow simple algorithms, linking everyday tasks with computational thinking.

Activity Idea: Human Robot

Ask pupils to work in pairs and create a simple algorithm to guide their partner across the classroom to collect an item. One child gives step-by-step directions (e.g., “take three steps forward, turn left”) and the other must follow exactly. After the challenge, review the instructions together and discuss how computers follow commands in the same way. This builds both logical sequencing and communication skills.
