The Four Operations Challenges: Find the Question Task Cards

These four operations challenge task cards present pupils with provided answers, whether in whole numbers or decimals, prompting them to find potential questions leading to those answers. Children will engage in finding the answer using specific operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). For example, they may encounter questions such as, “If the answer is 57, what could the question be? Can you solve this using four operations?” The task cards feature prominently displayed, bold numbers and lively illustrations of a child holding up the equals sign. Teachers can personalise their answers using the included blank copy, making it adaptable for various learning abilities.

This resource is crafted to help children understand that maths involves not just finding answers but also working backwards to unveil the questions. It underscores the importance of inverse operations for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Moreover, this tool aims to both challenge and enhance their understanding of calculations and problem-solving skills.

Our four operations challenges: find the question task cards are aligned with KS2 calculation on the national curriculum. This primary resource can be used with your ideas for maths activities and games, display boards, teaching material, learning aids, differentiation, homework, and lesson plans.
