Year 5 Reflection (Part 1) Worksheets | KS2 Geometry: Position & Direction | Primary Maths

Year 5 | Reflections of Shapes (Mirror Lines) Worksheets

Support your pupils in exploring symmetry with this Year 5 reflection of shapes (mirror lines) worksheet. The activity begins with three shapes placed in the first quadrant of a coordinate grid. Children are asked to reflect each shape across two mirror lines—one vertical and one horizontal—ensuring they accurately recreate the shape in the opposite position. Learners must use a ruler to carefully replicate the shapes, then colour-match the reflected shapes using the same blue, green and orange as the originals. The final task prompts children to create their own shape and reflect it across both mirror lines, promoting independent application of reflective symmetry.

Key Curriculum Focus

This KS2 geometry worksheet aligns with the national curriculum by supporting:

  • Identifying and drawing the reflection of shapes in horizontal and vertical mirror lines
  • Using coordinate grids to describe positions and transformations
  • Developing accuracy with shape drawing, alignment and symmetry on squared paper

This worksheet allows children to consolidate their understanding of reflection through guided and independent tasks. The Year 5 reflection of shapes (mirror lines) worksheet reinforces the importance of equal distances from the mirror line, encourages the use of precision tools, and helps learners to visualise transformations across axes.

Reflections of Shapes in Year 5 Maths

Reflection is when a shape is flipped across a line to create a mirror image. For example, if a triangle is 3 squares to the left of the vertical mirror line, its reflection will appear 3 squares to the right. In Year 5, children develop confidence in recognising symmetrical figures, plotting mirror images and describing transformations using mathematical language. Grid work supports spatial reasoning and encourages accurate placement.

Activity Idea: Mirror Image Grid Challenge

Give each child a small mirror and a pre-drawn shape on squared paper with a marked mirror line. Ask them to place the mirror on the line and use what they see to draw the reflected shape. Once confident, challenge them to create their own symmetrical patterns and reflect them across different axes.

Challenge your class with this Year 5 Reflections of Shapes (Coordinates) Worksheet. Pupils examine two shapes on a coordinate grid and are asked to calculate their new positions after reflection in a vertical mirror line. They also plot the vertices of a trapezoid and reflect it across the same line.
