Year 5 | Using Commas for Clearer Meanings Worksheets

In these Year 5 worksheets focused on using commas for clearer meanings, two identical sentences are presented with commas placed in different positions, indicating varying numbers of people visiting a park. Learners will carefully analyse these sentences and write down the number of people who went to the park based on the comma placements. Subsequently, children will read two phrases: “Let’s eat, Grandad!” and “Let’s eat Grandad!” The task involves answering questions about which phrase implies that Grandad might be eaten and which one suggests that Grandad is being invited to eat. Finally, your pupils will confront the challenge of crafting two similar sentences of their own to demonstrate how altering the placement of commas can alter the meaning of a sentence.

This worksheet provides your class with the opportunity to comprehend how using commas appropriately and precisely can generate different and clearer meanings, offering ample practice for applying this skill in their own sentence construction.

Our Year 5 punctuation worksheets are aligned with the KS2 national curriculum and will support your primary learning activities, differentiation, homework and lesson plans.
