Year 6 | Comparing and Ordering Fractions Worksheets

Support children in developing fraction reasoning with this Year 6 comparing and ordering fractions worksheet. In the first task, learners are given seven fractions and asked to arrange them from smallest to largest, using their understanding of denominators and equivalence. The second section presents a series of comparisons between mixed numbers and improper fractions, encouraging pupils to decide which is larger and explain why. The final challenge invites children to choose and order six fractions of their own, helping to reinforce their conceptual understanding of size and value.

Key Curriculum Focus

This KS2 fractions worksheet aligns with the national curriculum by supporting:

  • Ordering fractions with different denominators by finding equivalent values
  • Comparing improper and mixed fractions to reason about magnitude
  • Developing flexibility with fraction size through reasoning and visualisation

By tackling ordering and comparison in a progressive way, this Year 6 comparing and ordering fractions worksheet allows children to practise key fraction skills while deepening their confidence. The final section provides a creative extension that encourages pupils to apply their understanding flexibly and independently.

Comparing Fractions in Year 6 Maths

In Year 6, pupils compare and order fractions by converting them to common denominators or to decimals. For example, ½ and ⅓ become 3⁄6 and 2⁄6, making it clear that ½ is greater. Children become more confident by using bar models, number lines and pictorial representations, eventually transitioning to mental strategies and written methods for comparing size.

Activity Idea: Fraction Size Race

Prepare fraction cards with a mix of proper, improper and mixed fractions. Place them face down on a table. Children work in pairs to flip two cards, compare them, and keep the larger one. The child with the most cards after 5 rounds wins. This encourages mental comparison and quick recall of fraction size relationships.
