Year 6 | Proportions Worksheets

This Year 6 proportions worksheet supports children with scaling quantities up and down using real-world examples. Pupils are given a muffin recipe for 12 muffins, then asked to calculate how much of each ingredient is needed to make 6, 8 or 15 muffins instead. The quantities include mixed units (e.g. eggs, ml, grams and tablespoons), encouraging learners to apply multiplication and division strategies with a range of measures. Children complete the table by scaling all values in proportion, consolidating their understanding of ratio, proportion and reasoning with units.

Key Curriculum Focus

This Year 6 ratio and proportion worksheet aligns with the national curriculum by supporting:

  • Solving problems involving unequal sharing and scaling by simple fractions and multiples
  • Using ratio and proportion to adjust recipe quantities
  • Applying multiplication and division facts to real-life contexts involving measures

By scaling up and down from a fixed recipe, this Year 6 proportions worksheet strengthens children’s confidence in proportional reasoning. It prompts learners to think logically, apply consistent calculations across different measures and interpret the results accurately. The real-life cooking context helps reinforce the idea of ratio and scaling in everyday situations.

Proportions in Year 6 Maths

Proportions describe the relationship between quantities and how they scale relative to one another. For instance, if a recipe for 12 muffins uses 240ml milk, then a recipe for 6 muffins would use half the amount—120ml. In Year 6, children explore proportions using recipes, conversions and scaling problems, often requiring multiplication and division by unit or fractional amounts.

Activity Idea: Muffin Maths

Give your class blank recipe cards and ask them to invent their own recipe for 8 cookies. Once complete, challenge them to scale it for 4 and 16 cookies, checking each quantity is in correct proportion. This encourages multiplication reasoning with a creative twist.
