Year 6 | Rounding Decimal Numbers Worksheets

Support your pupils in mastering decimal rounding with this Year 6 rounding decimal numbers worksheet. It begins with a visual activity where children shade decimal numbers that round to 4.7 when rounded to the nearest tenth. The next task requires them to round various numbers (such as 2.353 and 71.125) to two decimal places. Section three builds reasoning by asking learners to generate their own numbers to three decimal places that fall between two given values. The final challenge involves deducing four different numbers that could round down to 12.86. This KS2 decimals activity develops confidence with place value and strengthens logical thinking.

Key Curriculum Focus

This KS2 decimals worksheet aligns with the national curriculum by supporting:

  • Rounding decimals with one or two decimal places to the nearest whole number or tenth
  • Solving number problems that involve reasoning about decimal values
  • Understanding decimal place value and comparing decimal numbers

The Year 6 rounding decimal numbers worksheet introduces rounding through progressive challenge, starting with tenths before extending to hundredths and thousandths. It encourages children to think logically and estimate with precision, while also reinforcing their understanding of decimal value. By completing each task, pupils demonstrate their grasp of place value relationships and rounding rules across varied contexts.

Rounding Decimals in Year 6 Maths

Rounding decimals means adjusting a number to the nearest required place value, depending on which digit comes next. For example, 2.678 rounded to two decimal places becomes 2.68, as the third digit (8) is 5 or more. In Year 6, children deepen their place value understanding by rounding decimals to one, two or even three decimal places. Through visual prompts, trial numbers and context-based challenges, they build accuracy and flexible reasoning strategies.

Activity Idea: Decimal Dartboard

Draw a large dartboard-style target on the board labelled with tenths (e.g. 4.6, 4.7, 4.8). Read out different decimal numbers such as 4.74, 4.68 or 4.75, and ask children to ‘throw’ their imaginary dart at the correct target by rounding. To make it more interactive, have learners create their own decimal numbers for a partner to round and ‘hit’ the correct area.
