Year 6 | Scale Factors Worksheets

This Year 6 scale factors worksheet helps children develop proportional reasoning using familiar visual representations. Pupils begin by comparing two triangles, calculating the dimensions of a smaller triangle that is five times smaller than the original. They then work with measurements of two toy soldiers to identify the scale factor difference and calculate the height gap. In the final task, learners are asked to enlarge a shape on a grid using a given scale factor, encouraging spatial thinking and multiplication of length units.

Key Curriculum Focus

This Year 6 ratio and proportion worksheet aligns with the national curriculum by supporting:

  • Solving problems involving similar shapes where the scale factor is known or can be found
  • Using multiplication and division to scale quantities in geometric and everyday contexts
  • Reasoning mathematically about shape transformations and proportional changes

Learners explore how a scale factor affects lengths and shapes in practical situations. This Year 6 scale factors worksheet helps children connect ratio to real-world objects and apply visual understanding to numerical reasoning, supporting both conceptual clarity and procedural confidence.

Angle Rules in Year 6 Maths

A scale factor describes how much a shape or object is enlarged or reduced in size. For instance, if a triangle has sides of 60cm, 105cm and 125cm, a smaller version with a scale factor of 1:5 would have sides measuring 12cm, 21cm and 25cm. In Year 6, pupils use multiplication and division to calculate these relationships and apply them to both abstract shapes and real-life items, such as models or drawings.

Activity Idea: Mini to Mega Drawing

Give children a small 1cm by 1cm grid and ask them to draw a simple shape, such as a right-angled triangle. Then provide a larger grid and ask them to recreate the same shape using a scale factor of 2 or 3. This hands-on activity reinforces understanding of enlargement and how all sides grow in proportion.
