Year 6 | Sequences Worksheets

Stretch your children’s pattern-spotting skills with this Year 6 sequences worksheet, designed to build understanding of algebraic thinking. In the first task, pupils are given a variety of sequences involving numbers, decimals and letters, and asked to complete the next three terms in each one. They must also identify and write the rule. The second task focuses on a decimal sequence, encouraging learners to describe the pattern precisely. Finally, the third activity invites children to create their own sequences and explain their rules. This KS2 worksheet develops pattern recognition and helps learners connect sequences to algebraic reasoning.

Key Curriculum Focus

This KS2 algebra worksheet aligns with the national curriculum by supporting:

  • Generating and describing linear number sequences
  • Using logic to identify patterns in sequences of numbers and letters
  • Expressing rules using mathematical vocabulary and reasoning

The Year 6 sequences worksheet helps children work systematically to identify relationships between terms. Pupils are challenged to think beyond basic arithmetic and consider the underlying rule. The task of writing their own sequences also encourages creativity and deeper understanding, while supporting communication of mathematical ideas clearly and logically.

Sequences in Year 6 Maths

A sequence is a list of values arranged in a particular order, often based on a rule. For example, in the sequence 15, 20, 26, the pattern increases by 5, then 6, suggesting alternating additions. In Year 6, children work with both numerical and letter-based patterns, including simple linear sequences, fractional increases and geometric sequences. They are taught to explain the rule in words and begin expressing it algebraically, which lays a strong foundation for secondary maths.

Activity Idea: Secret Sequence Swap

Ask each pupil to write a short sequence and keep the rule secret. They swap with a partner, who must figure out the rule and complete the next few terms. Once finished, partners check each other’s rules and discuss whether more than one rule could apply. This promotes reasoning and critical thinking about patterns.
