Year 6 | Shape Properties Worksheets

Reinforce shape knowledge and reasoning with this Year 6 shape properties worksheet, designed to consolidate understanding of regular and irregular 2D shapes. Children are first asked to read a series of geometry statements and decide whether each is true or false, covering concepts such as symmetry, equal sides, angles and parallel lines. In the second task, learners complete a table showing the properties of common shapes, including kites, parallelograms, pentagons and octagons. They must identify how many lines of symmetry, equal angles and pairs of parallel sides each shape has, encouraging careful comparison and accurate terminology.

Key Curriculum Focus

This KS2 geometry worksheet aligns with the national curriculum by supporting:

  • Comparing and classifying geometric shapes based on properties and sizes
  • Identifying lines of symmetry and recognising equal angles
  • Using the correct mathematical language to describe 2D shape features

This Year 6 shape properties worksheet enables learners to recall and apply geometry vocabulary while reasoning about the properties of familiar shapes. The true/false section develops critical thinking as children evaluate each statement, while the table provides practice in categorising and sorting shapes by key attributes. It’s ideal for review, assessment or guided discussion during geometry units.

Properties of Shapes in Year 6 Maths

In Year 6, pupils learn to describe and classify shapes based on their sides, angles, lines of symmetry and other attributes. For instance, a regular hexagon has 6 equal sides and 3 pairs of parallel lines. By Year 6, children are expected to use terms like ‘parallel’, ‘perpendicular’, ‘equal angles’ and ‘symmetry’ with confidence. They build on earlier knowledge to make comparisons and justify their reasoning, which prepares them for more abstract geometry in secondary school.

Activity Idea: Shape Sorting Grid

Create a large Venn diagram or Carroll diagram on the board with categories such as “Has equal angles”, “Has 2 or more lines of symmetry” and “Has parallel sides”. Provide children with shape cut-outs or names and ask them to place each in the correct section of the diagram. This visual activity promotes deeper understanding of how properties can overlap and encourages collaborative reasoning.
