Year 5 | Coordinates Worksheets

Help your pupils deepen their understanding of coordinates with this Year 5 coordinates worksheet. Learners begin by plotting six coordinate pairs on a grid, for example, (1,4), (5,3), and (8,5), and are then asked to connect the points using a ruler to identify the shape formed. The second part of the worksheet introduces reasoning questions, such as identifying the coordinates of a midpoint between two given points. This two-step activity strengthens children’s spatial awareness and builds accuracy in interpreting and plotting coordinates on a grid.

Key Curriculum Focus

This KS2 geometry worksheet aligns with the national curriculum by supporting:

  • Identifying, describing and plotting points on a 2D grid using the first quadrant
  • Drawing and completing geometric figures using coordinate points
  • Reasoning about shapes and positions through coordinate-based problem-solving

Pupils use this Year 5 coordinates worksheet to practise accurate plotting and interpreting of coordinates, applying their understanding to form shapes and solve problems involving position. The inclusion of reasoning questions enhances their ability to explain coordinate relationships and work systematically with grid-based tasks.

Coordinates in Year 5 Maths

Coordinates describe a position on a grid using a pair of numbers. For example, the point (4,2) is 4 units across and 2 units up on a grid. In Year 5, children use the first quadrant, where both numbers are positive, to plot and identify points. Through repeated practice, learners develop confidence reading from axes, visualising points and understanding the relationship between coordinates and shape.

Activity Idea: Human Coordinate Grid

Create a large grid on the classroom floor using masking tape and label the axes. Call out coordinates for children to stand on, one by one, until the shape begins to form. The class can guess the shape being made and then suggest further coordinates to complete or extend it. This kinesthetic activity supports memory and helps reinforce position concepts through movement.

Help your class develop spatial awareness with this Year 5 Reflections of Shapes (Mirror Lines) Worksheet. Children are asked to reflect three coloured shapes across both a vertical and horizontal mirror line on a square grid, reinforcing their understanding of symmetry and positioning.
