Year 6 | Reflection of Shapes (Four Quadrants) Worksheets

Strengthen your class’s understanding of symmetry and position with this Year 6 reflection of shapes (four quadrants) worksheet. The activity begins with a grid displaying two coloured shapes labelled A and C, each placed in different positions across the four-quadrant plane. Children are asked to reflect shape A across the x-axis to create shape B and reflect shape C across the y-axis to create shape D. Once reflected, pupils write the coordinates of the new vertices and complete an additional task that asks them to reflect the original shapes into the fourth quadrant, reinforcing understanding of both axes.

Key Curriculum Focus

This KS2 geometry worksheet aligns with the national curriculum by supporting:

  • Describing positions and movements on the full coordinate grid
  • Drawing and translating shapes and reflecting them across axes
  • Understanding symmetry in relation to coordinates and axes

By reflecting shapes across both the x- and y-axes, this worksheet deepens children’s spatial awareness and logical thinking. The reflection tasks require accurate plotting and visualisation, while the coordinate recording supports precise mathematical communication. This Year 6 reflection of shapes (four quadrants) worksheet gives learners valuable practice with transformations and prepares them for more advanced geometry topics.

Reflection in Year 6 Maths

A reflection is a flip of a shape across a line, producing a mirror image. In Year 6, children learn to reflect shapes across the x- and y-axes using all four quadrants. For example, a triangle at (-3, 2) flipped over the x-axis becomes (-3, -2). Pupils use coordinate rules and grid lines to complete reflections accurately, combining geometry with number and position skills.

Activity Idea: Mirror Line Edges

Use a large square grid printed on card or displayed on the board. Draw a shape on one side of a vertical or horizontal line, and challenge children to complete the reflection using mini whiteboards or cut-out shapes. Introduce labels to record vertex coordinates as they work through different positions.
